Sandy Scott Wheeler, the 19-year-old who is paralyzed as the result of a car accident in October, has been moved from Scottburgh’s GJ Crookes Hospital to his permanent home in Umkomaas. A large group of friends and care-givers gathered at the small cottage in Brad Street, where they celebrated his return with a braai. Installed in an adjustable bed and surrounded by cheerful young people, Sandy struggled to find words to thank the “friends of Sandy” who have given him a new life.
Eventually, he said, “Thanks everyone, there are just too many of you and I don’t know what to say.” The “Friends of Sandy Trust” thanks the monthly contributors who collectively give Sandy a life. Sadie de Kramer, who supervises the care-givers, Patsons for the flooring, BramsTV for the satellite dish, Mike Hames for all the electrics, Brian Smith for all the plumbing, Peter van Niekerk for Sandys adjustable bed and table, Lemmy Giradauex for the fridge and air conditioner, Johnny Hutt for the security system, Brett Louw and staff at the Whaler Dive Centre, Dave Watermeyer for the physiotherapy, Chris and Lee Murch for the “designer” wheelchair and Anthony for the wonderful dolphins painted on Sandys wall and all Sandys friends for their hard work in renovating and painting Sandys pad.
As Sandy’s care is ongoing, the trust asks those who care and can, to fill in a debit order form for an amount they can afford to be paid into the trust each month. “No amount is too small,” says June Holtzhausen, who has taken up Sandy’s cause.
